Does cellulite only occur in women?

Women's and men's skin are structurally different. Men's skin is thicker and their fiber network is more massive, which is why the phenomenon of cellulite appears much later and much less frequently in them than in their female counterparts.

Cellulite, also known as orange peel skin, is a lymphatic circulation disorder, also known as the mattress phenomenon due to the enlargement of individual fat cells under the skin. In this case, the metabolism of fat cells slows down, and toxins, glycerides, water drawn from surrounding tissues, and waste products accumulate in them.

The enlarged, stretched fat cells begin to press on the capillaries between them, which is why blood and lymph circulation in these areas is uneven and the area affected by cellulite feels cold to the touch.

The top layer of our skin is the very thin epidermis, which is no more than 1 mm thick. Beneath it is the dermis, which ensures the skin's firmness: if we pinch our skin, it stretches, and when we release it, it immediately smoothes out. This elasticity is due to the dermis. The connective tissue cells of the dermis produce many protein fibers that form a spatial network.

In men, this fiber network has a different course and is much stronger than in women. This is also very important because the fiber network acts like a rope to hold down the fat cells. The connective tissue fiber structure in women is made up of parallel elements, while in men it is made up of transverse elements. In addition, the connective tissue fibers in women run perpendicular to the skin, so each connection point pulls the skin downward.

In addition, in women, these fibers are much further apart, so swollen fat cells can protrude much more easily between them than in the case of men's strong, tight fiber network. As the fat cells grow, the moisture accumulated in them causes edema, and the swollen knots, when they meet each other, break the lattice structure of the fibers and bulge, and the surface of the skin becomes uneven.

The looser nature of the female fiber network can be explained primarily by the fact that during pregnancy, the connective tissue needs to stretch more easily. This is also why stretch marks often develop. However, as time goes by, the looser fiber network results in less tight connective tissue: to use the previous analogy, the ropes that hold the fat cells down become much looser, and in some cases even loosen, favoring the development of cellulite or cellulite.

The cosmetic industry offers many solutions for eliminating cellulite: for example, during cellulite massage, we increase the metabolism of fat cells, blood circulation and its oxygen supply. Another solution could be vacuum treatment, during which the skin surface is sucked up with various devices, such as a glass bell, and the nodules located there are crushed. This treatment is usually supplemented with cellulite ampoules that break down fat and also result in weight loss, which contain caffeine, L-carnitine, cinnamon, lemon, yarrow, ginger, juniper, citronella, horse chestnut, grapefruit, pomegranate, rosemary, geranium, gingko, ginseng, sea buckthorn, amber, peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender or orange extracts.

Body wrapping is also a very effective solution, with which excellent results can be achieved in case of body shaping and cellulite problems. In addition, this solution is very effective in treating weight loss problems and loose, sagging skin. Thanks to the improved metabolic processes, the subpapillary vascular network also supplies blood rich in oxygen and minerals to the upper part of the connective tissue, thus the consistency and hydration of the connective tissue, and consequently the tone of the skin, improves.

There are also many electrocosmetic devices available that combine one of the aforementioned methods with mechanical energy, radio frequency, or laser solutions. One of the most effective electrocosmetic devices for fat breakdown and cellulite elimination is the PowerShape2, which combines three extremely effective methods at once (vacuum, laser, radio frequency), thus increasing the effectiveness of the device.
