    Earth Day is an international environmental event celebrated worldwide on April 22.
    Earth Day began in the United States on April 22, 1970, at the initiative of Senator Gaylord Nelson. Its aim is to draw attention to the preservation of our planet's natural environment, the dangers of climate change, and the importance of sustainable development. In 1990, Earth Day became a global movement, and more than 140 countries joined, including Hungary.

    What is the significance of Earth Day for the beauty industry?
    Earth Day is also an important event from the perspective of the cosmetics industry and beauty salons.
    Earth Day is not only a global environmental day, but also an event that gives industries – including the beauty industry – an opportunity to reflect on their own environmental impact and move towards more responsible operations.

    The environmental impact of the cosmetics industry
    The beauty industry – especially the production and distribution of cosmetic products – places a significant environmental burden on the planet. In particular, packaging materials, plastic bottles and jars, chemicals, water consumption and transportation significantly increase the ecological footprint of the sector. On the occasion of Earth Day, it is worth paying attention to these impacts and looking for alternative, sustainable solutions.

    What can beauticians and beauty salons do?
    The beauty industry can also do a lot to protect the environment, for example:
    • taking sustainability aspects into account when selecting products (e.g. organic, animal-free products, biodegradable or recyclable packaging);
    • waste reduction and selective collection, and paperless design in the salon;
    • use of water and energy efficient devices and equipment;
    • educating customers about environmentally conscious skin care;
    • developing a green procurement policy.

    As more and more major cosmetics brands around the world transition to sustainable packaging, carbon-neutral or water-efficient manufacturing, small salons can also make a difference by paying attention to their operations within their means.
    Sustainability and beauty are not mutually exclusive – in fact, they can go hand in hand. Earth Day is a reminder that every decision matters: the material of the jar, the water and energy used, the brands chosen, the collection of waste. Beauty salons and beauticians can also be active players in a greener, more livable future.
